Intense Pulsed Light Technology
The CLARO uses heat and light to treat mild to moderate inflammatory acne. The most common cause of acne is the bacteria p. acnes and part of its normal metabolism is the production of porphyrin. The CLARO stimulates the porphyrin which causes the creation of singlet oxygen, which in turn then attacks and kills off the p. acnes.
Stimulation of the porphyrin is achieved by activating the filtered xenon flash lamp multiple times in less than 6 seconds to achieve a fluence of 6 joules/cm2. This causes two simultaneous processes to take place.
The first process is the absorption of blue light (400-430 nm) by the porphyrin which begins the process of creation of singlet oxygen. Blue light has been shown to be effective in stimulating the production of singlet oxygen in porphyrin.
The second process to simultaneously take place is the introduction of heat to the treatment area via the infra-red light (700nm and above) emitted by the flash lamp. The 6 second treatment cycle achieves a temperature of approximately 49°C to the intended treatment area. The addition of heat to the light therapy helps to accelerate the chemical reaction.
Heat and red light (600nm range) helps to reduce inflammation and soothe the pain of acne lesions.
